Honorable Cristian Bușoi, Chair of the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee and a member of the European People’s Party, underscored that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has transformed energy into a pivotal battleground, presenting Europe with both escalating energy prices and significant supply security challenges. He elucidated the European Union’s response, encompassing the Versailles Declaration and the REPowerEU plan aimed at eliminating Russian energy imports, diversifying suppliers, augmenting renewable energy capacity, expanding hydrogen markets, enhancing energy efficiency, and securing over 90% of gas storage in anticipation of winter. He emphasized the imperative to strike a balance between immediate emergency interventions and long-term commitments to competitive energy markets and decarbonization under the EU Green Deal. Bușoi emphasized the significance of the transatlantic partnership, expressing gratitude for the increased United States LNG exports and advocating for medium- and long-term cooperation with American suppliers. While acknowledging European apprehensions regarding the Inflation Reduction Act, he urged coordination rather than confrontation, underscoring that EU-U.S. unity is crucial to counter Russia’s “energy war,” safeguard industry and consumers, and sustain robust support for Ukraine.
