Mr. John Strand, with 25 years of experience in the mobile telecommunications industry, specifically focusing on network infrastructure security, shared his insights on the security concerns raised by the United States since 2012. He emphasized the critical nature of telecommunications networks as national infrastructure and cautioned against the use of foreign technology without adequate safeguards, which could expose countries to vulnerabilities and potential data access by external governments.

Strand highlighted that while Huawei has faced restrictions in telecom infrastructure, it has rapidly expanded its presence in cloud services across Latin America. This expansion raises concerns about the potential storage of sensitive government, corporate, and personal data on systems that may be subject to Chinese security laws.

Furthermore, Strand raised concerns about data collection through digital platforms such as TikTok and other smartphone applications that gather extensive user information and transmit it to cloud servers. He advised policymakers to enhance digital awareness, strengthen regulatory oversight, and educate citizens about responsible technology use.

While supporting digitalization and technological development, Strand underscored the importance of transparency, cybersecurity, and informed policy decisions to safeguard national security and citizens’ data.
